Addiction Studies Program for Journalists
2010 Award Competition

The Addiction Studies Program for Journalists, co-sponsored by Wake Forest University School of Medicine and National Families in Action, announces its 2010 Award Competition. The competition is open to all graduates of the Addiction Studies Program for Journalists who attended a workshop since June 2005. Cash prizes of $500 will be given to winners who submit the most scientifically accurate, informative, and well written stories they have written and published or produced about alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use, abuse, or addiction since December 7, 2007, the date of the most recent competition. Journalists may compete for one of three awards:

2010 Mass Media Award
For an article or series published in a magazine or newspaper

2010 Broadcast Award
For a program or series broadcast on radio or television

2010 Journal Award
For an article or series published in a medical or scientific journal

Funding for the Award
Funding for this award comes from the Substance Abuse Policy Research Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which funds policy research that can help reduce the harm caused by the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs in the United States.

Judges
A panel of both scientists and journalists will serve as judges.

How to Apply
"Click here" to fill out an entry form for each entry submitted. You may submit up to three entries. The competition will accept hard copies only. For stories with supplemental material on the publisher’s website, please send a hard copy of the story and include the URL where judges can access the story with its supplemental links. Questions? Where to Send Entries
Send four (4) copies of each entry to Sue Rusche, Co-Director, Addiction Studies Program for Journalists, C/O National Families in Action, 1436 Cornell Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30306 (Phone: 404-248-9676). Please confirm to srusche@nationalfamilies.org that you have sent your entries via regular or overnight mail so we can track them.

Deadline for Submissions
Friday, April 30, 2010. No entries will be accepted after April 30, 2010.

Award Announcement
Winners of the Addiction Studies Program for Journalists 2010 Awards will be notified in advance and announced at the June 11-12, 2010, Addiction Studies Program workshop in Scottsdale, Arizona.
